MERCER PARK, New Jersey – The Marist men’s rowing team opened its season competing at the Knecht Cup this past weekend. Over 50 rowing teams from around the country were in attendance at the two day event making it one of the larger regattas that the teams attend each year.
The men’s freshman/novice four placed first out of seven boats in their first heat, with the top three plus the next three fastest times advancing to the semifinal. The Red Foxes beat out Lafayette, Penn State, NY Maritime, Scranton and Maryland boats to finish at 7:30.16 over 10 seconds better than the rest of the heat.
Marist’s freshman/novice four would continue to dominate their heat as they placed first again in their semifinal ahead of Carnegie Mellon, Bucknell, UNC, Army West Point, and Fairfield.
The freshman/novice boat then moved on to the final where they were crowned champions with a 7:11.43 finish, besting Bowdoin, Penn State, Wentworth A & B boats, Lafayette, and Carnegie Mellon.
Marist’s varsity eight boat competed in the second heat and finished second behind Virginia while beating out boats from Mercyhurst, North Carolina, and Marietta. Their second place finish moved them on the semifinal.
In the semifinals the men’s varsity eight would place second and reach the grand final with a time of 6:05.01 beating out Rhode Island, Rutgers, Merceyhurst, Trinity, and Jacksonville. In the grand final, Marist finished fourth out of six boats, trailing St. Joseph’s, Virginia, and Army West Point and besting Delaware and Rhode Island.
The second varsity eight also finished second in their heat to move on to the grand final, trailing only Delaware and beating out boats from North Carolina, Rutgers, Boston College, Rhode Island, and George Mason. In the grand final Marist would finish fifth with a time of 6:16.32.
The varsity four (7:28.98) would finish heat three behind George Mason A, North Carolina, Loyola, and Villanova.
Marist next hits the water against Holy Cross and Georgetown on Saturday, April 15th at Princeton, New Jersey.
