POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - On Senior Day for the Marist women’s lacrosse team, goalie Abigail Witczak reached 500 career saves in a 10-9 overtime loss to Fairfield on April 15.

Witczak is fourth all time on Marist’s save list and one behind Christy Uellendahl for third place after stopping 12 shots from the Stags today.

Marist scored seven times in the second half to erase a four-goal deficit, but lost with 22 seconds left in the extra frame when Fairfield senior Alex Fehmel drove to the net and drilled the game-winner.

Marist senior Natalie Bonaroti had a hat trick in the second stanza and sophomore Hailey Wagner added three points on two goals and an assist. Eight of the game’s goals were scored on free position shots with Marist going 2-for-7 and Fairfield shooting 7-for-11 from behind the 3-meter arc.

The game was tied at 2-2 by the 23:18 mark of the first half. From that point on the Stags stopped the see saw affair by scoring three unanswered goals and Marist trailed 5-2 at the half.

The Red Foxes crept back into the game as time went on, as they scored four times in a 13-minute stretch that began with a goal from senior Olivia Pitonzo and ended with Wagner hitting the back of the net. The game was tied at seven with 12:03 to go.

A prolonged Fairfield possession featured two saves by Witczak, including one on a free position shot from senior Riley Hellstein. An unassisted score by Bonaroti gave Marist the lead for about 40 seconds before Fehmel retaliated with a free position goal to knot the game at nine.

Marist won the only draw in overtime, but could not respond defensively.

The Red Foxes will hit the road and travel to Western New York for a conference matchup at Niagara. Opening draw is slated for 2 p.m. April 19.
