POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist softball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader against Iona at Gartland Field. The Red Foxes won via the mercy rule by a score of 8-0 in game one, but fell in game two, 3-0.

Senior Janna Korak and junior Gabrielle Kelliher led the Red Foxes with three hits apiece on the day. Here is a closer look at each game:

Game One – Marist 8, Iona 0 (6 innings)

The game started off as a pitchers’ duel between Marist red-shirt senior Jessica Van Alphen and Iona’s Marnie Skinner, but a two-run double by junior Kourtney Paul opened the scoring in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Brandi Coon followed up with an RBI single of her own, giving Marist a 3-0 lead going into the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Marist bats came alive as Korak and senior Rebecca Freeman hit back-to-back home runs. Later in the inning, back-to-back RBI singles by freshman Ali Milam and Coon enabled the Red Foxes to win by the mercy rule.

Van Alphen (7-2) struck out nine batters in her third complete game shutout of the year, which included striking out the side in the second inning. She allowed just three hits and only surrendered one walk. Out of 22 batters, she threw a first-pitch strike to 17. She threw 63 of her 89 pitches for strikes.

Paul, Coon, and Korak each finished with two hits and two RBIs. Freeman and Kelliher each had two hits and scored two runs.

Skinner (5-6) was responsible for seven earned runs in her 5.1 innings pitched. She struck out three.

Game Two – Iona 3, Marist 0

The Gaels were able to take an early 3-0 lead thanks to a sacrifice fly by Kristen Turner in the first, and back-to-back homers by Hailey Thompson and Kelsey Long in the second. Senior Jayne Oberdorf then entered in relief for the Red Foxes, and tossed 5.2 scoreless and hitless innings, striking out five.

Iona received a complete game two-hitter from Alana Evans (8-4), who struck out seven while only walking two. The Red Foxes were able to bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but were unable to push any runs across.

Marist starter Kallen Leeseberg (3-5) took the loss. She struck out one in 1.1 innings. Korak and Kelliher each had singles for the Red Foxes.

Marist is now 20-13 overall and 3-3 in the MAAC. Iona is 15-14 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

The Red Foxes will be back in action on Wednesday, April 12, for a road doubleheader against Holy Cross. First pitch for game one is set for 2 p.m.
