WILLIAMSVILLE, New York – The Marist men’s tennis team defeated the Niagara Purple Eagles in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play Friday evening by a score of 7-0. After the win, the Red Foxes improve to 11-2 overall and 3-0 in MAAC play.

“I thought Niagara really competed well, overall a good result as our doubles continues to be a work in progress,” said head coach Tim Smtih. “Special kudos to Justin (Chanthalangsy) for battling back and winning the 10 point breaker.”

The Red Foxes won two of the three doubles matches to secure the doubles point and the 1-0 overall match lead. Carlos Moreno and Justin Chanthalangsy teamed up to defeat Niagara’s Lukas Wenninger and Josh Wilson, 6-3 and Javier Restrepo and Gianlucca Massa defeated Francis Nadeau and Felipe Fuentes, 6-4.

In singles play, the Red Foxes didn’t drop a match winning at all six positions. Jan Dernic won the first singles match for the Red Foxes over Wenninger, 6-1, 6-2. Javier Restrepo followed up with a win from the first position, 6-2, 6-2, and Massa then clinched the match for Marist with a straight set, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Taylan Ozdemir.

Chanthalangsy would win a three set match, Dylan Fletcher playing from the no. 4 spot would win his match in straight sets, and Lars Schouten would complete the singles sweep with a three set win at the no. 5 position.

The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday at St. Bonaventure. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
