POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men’s tennis team secured a thrilling victory over the Quinnipiac Bobcats Wednesday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action. With the win, the Red Foxes move to 10-2 overall and 2-0 in conference.
The Red Foxes would find themselves behind the eight ball early, as Quinnipiac picked up the crucial doubles' point winning at the first and third positions. Javier Restrepo and Gianlucca Massa would defeat the Bobcats’ Austin Yannone and Axel Stern, 6-3 but Quinnipiac's other wins gave them early control of the match.
Singles play was a seesaw affair as the teams traded points while eventually ending up tied at 3-3 with the match riding on a battle at the first singles position.
Justin Chanthalangsy picked up the first Marist point, winning convincingly at the no. 4 position over Quinnipiac’s Patrick Cachapero, 6-2, 6-3. The Bobcats would then pull ahead 2-1 after winning from the six spot, 6-2, 6-4.The Red Foxes then tied the match up again as Christopher Gladden downed Axel Stern, 6-1, 6-3.
With the match tied at 2-2, Quinnipiac took the lead back as Julian Rozenstien defeated Gianlucca Massa, 6-4, 7-5. The remaining two matches on the court from the no. 1 and no. 2 positions were extended to third and final sets as the Bobcats led 3-2 in overall match points.
At the second position, Rudolf Kurz gutted out his match after dropping the first set 4-6. Kurz went on to defeat Quinnipiac’s Freddie Zaretsky, 6-3, 6-2 in the final two sets, knotting the overall score at 3-3.
The final match left on the court was fittingly in the hands of the two team’s top players. Restrepo took the first set off Quinnipiac’s Kei Ezaka 6-4 before Ezaka battled back to win the second set 6-2. After a back and forth final set that ended up locked at 6-6, the match went to a seven-point tiebreaker. Restrepo prevailed 8-6 in the tiebreak and clinched the win for the Red Foxes.
“It was a wonderful college match had we won our lost but it did feel better winning it,” said head coach Tim Smith. “Special kudos to our play at singles, we may have to adjust some things at doubles but overall a terrific showing.”
The Red Foxes will continue MAAC play with a road match at Niagara on Saturday, April 8th.
