NEW HAVEN, Connecticut - Both teams scratched and clawed in a rematch of the last two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship games, but the Marist Red Foxes came out on top in a 9-8 thriller April 8 in Yale’s Reese Stadium.

After three ties and a near comeback by the Bobcats in the second half, Marist moved to 6-5 on the season and 1-2 in the MAAC standings. Quinnipiac dropped to 2-7 and 1-3 in conference play.

Freshman Joe Tierney netted his first career hat trick and notched a point in his 11th straight game. Senior J.D. Recor added four points on a goal and three assists to come within five of tying the all-time conference record and junior Kyle Quinn added three points.

Neither team led by more than three on the night. Marist prolonged possessions in the opening minutes as junior Mitchell Standera hit the back of the net on a man up to tie the score at one. After the first quarter ended 2-2, Tierney scored his first goal of the night in the second quarter followed by sophomore Collin Dizon. Two goals from Quinnipiac 1:25 apart brought both teams even, but Quinn found Tierney open and Tierney rocketed a score as time expired to give Marist the 5-4 advantage heading into the locker room.

Marist deflected Bobcats’ shots left and right in the third quarter and extended its lead to three. A flurry of penalties at the end of the third frame put the Red Foxes a man up to start the fourth quarter, but Quinnipiac gained momentum as time went on. A man up score from redshirt junior Clayton Frank at the 7:43 mark gave the Red Foxes some wiggle room at 8-6.

The Bobcats did not go away quietly however, as junior Ryan Lawson took it to the net himself and scored a man up goal with 29 seconds to go. Down by one, Quinnipiac won the faceoff but its final shot went wide of the net and the Red Foxes got their first conference win of the season against the reigning MAAC champions.

Quinnipiac’s balanced offense featured four different scorers and six Bobcats had assists. Marist’s defense held its opponent to single digit goals once again by causing eight turnovers, half of which came from sophomore James Sarrocco. Junior Matt Galioto went 9-for-14 in the faceoff X and led the Red Foxes with six ground balls.

Marist will face off against Manhattan for its next MAAC test at 11:30 a.m. April 15.
