POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader against Siena on Sunday, losing the first game 3-1, but bouncing back in the second game with a 10-0 win in five innings.
The Red Foxes’ impressive pitching staff was on full display, as senior Jayne Oberdorf, red-shirt senior Jessica Van Alphen, and sophomore Megan Beiermeister combined for seven strikeouts while allowing just eight hits and one earned run allowed in 12 innings pitched.
Junior Miranda Perez had a big day for Marist, going a combined 3-for-4 with two walks and an RBI double, as well as contributing stellar defense at shortstop. Senior catcher Rebecca Freeman also blasted her fourth home run of the season in the second game.
Here is a closer look at each game:
Game One - Siena 3, Marist 1
The Saints struck first in the top of the first after a leadoff double from Brooke Taylor led to a two-out RBI single by Madysen Cossack.
In the top of the sixth, Siena added two runs on an error and a wild pitch, making the score 3-0.
The Red Foxes loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth after two walks and a single by Perez. Freeman got Marist on the board, scoring sophomore Casey Page with an RBI fielder’s choice. The Red Foxes brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but Lauren Butts struck out the final two batters, finishing the complete game.
Oberdorf (2-2) pitched 5.2 innings on 68 pitches (49 strikes) giving up just one earned run. She allowed just four hits and no walks, striking out three.
Butts threw 102 pitches in the game, only allowing one unearned run and two hits with five strikeouts.
Game Two - Marist 10, Siena 0 (5 innings)
Marist broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Red Foxes loaded the bases with one out, and scored their first run when junior Brittany Colombo was hit by a pitch. Page plated another run with an RBI single, and two more runs scored on an error. Perez drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI double.
Marist tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third, when two runs scored on a throwing error following an infield single by sophomore Brandi Coon. Colombo drove in another run on an RBI infield single.
The Red Foxes extended their lead to 10 in the bottom of the fourth, after Freeman crushed a 1-2 pitch over the left-field wall for a two-run homer.
Van Alphen (6-2) pitched five scoreless innings, throwing just 60 pitches, in the mercy-shortened complete game. The red-shirt senior allowed just three hits and two walks, striking out three. Butts started the second game as well for Siena, and went the first two innings to take the loss.
Marist moves to 16-11 on the season with the split, and Siena moves to 4-19. It was the opening MAAC doubleheader for both teams. In a schedule change, Marist will return to action on Monday with a doubleheader against Cornell at Gartland Field that was originally scheduled for Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
