LEXINGTON, Virginia – Behind two goals from senior Nastassia McGlothlin and sophomores Grace Doerfler and Katherine Tijerina, the Marist water polo team picked up an 11-9 win over the Villanova Wildcats on Sunday afternoon at the Virginia Military Institute.

With the win, the Red Foxes improve to 13-12 (5-2 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference).

Tijerina led Marist on the day with two goals, two assists and one steal, while McGlothlin finished with two goals and one drawn kickout and Doerfler chipped in two goals. Junior co-captain Diana Carballo had one goal, two assists and one steal, senior co-captain Amanda Amorosa finished with one goal, one assist and three steals and sophomore Ariana Singer chipped in one goal, one assist and two steals. Freshmen Carolyn Gauvin and Lexi Puhl each finished with one goal, senior co-captain Jocelyn McQuade had one assist and one steal and freshman Justine Castro had one assist.

In goal, sophomore Hope Vickers finished with four goals against and one save and junior Jessica Hermosillo finished with five goals against and six saves on the day.

The first quarter proved to be a defensive battle with Amorosa scoring the period’s lone goal at 4:57 and after the opening eight minutes it was 1-0 Red Foxes.

Shelia Gerrity tied the game for the Wildcats with a goal 0:56 into the second before McGlothlin gave the Red Foxes the lead back with a goal 1:07 later. Gauvin made it a two goal lead when she found the back of the net with 0:54 remaining in the half but Kate Stenmoen trimmed the deficit to 3-2 on a goal with nine seconds left.

Puhl’s goal 1:18 into the second half brought it back to a two goal Red Fox lead but back-to-back scores by Stenmoen and Katie French tied the game at 4-4 with 5:14 left to play in the third quarter. Just 16 seconds later, Singer gave Marist back the lead at 5-4 with a goal but again the Wildcats tied the game when Dominique Clark scored with 4:58 left in the quarter. Back-to-back goals by Doerfler and Tijerina gave Marist the 7-5 lead before Katy Gauvin (sister of Marist’s Carolyn Gauvin) scored with 0:44 left in the third period to bring Villanova back within one. Doerfler’s second of the game with 25 seconds was answered by another score by Clark with 14 seconds left but McGlothlin was able to find the back of the net just before the clock expired to give the Red Foxes the 9-7 lead with eight minutes left to play.

With just two goals separating the two teams, both sides came out looking for the early score in the fourth quarter. Carballo made it 10-7 with a goal at 6:17 but the Wildcats answered on Clark’s third of the game to make it a two goal game again with 5:52 left to play. Tijerina’s second pushed Marist ahead 11-8 with 4:06 left in the game. Villanova looked for the equalizers and brought it to 11-9 off a goal by Stenmoen with 53 seconds left. The Red Fox defense was able limit the Wildcat chances for the remainder of the game and the final buzzer sounded with Marist victorious 11-9.
