HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Marist softball team split its first two games at the Rainbow Wahine Classic on Wednesday. The Red Foxes were defeated by Purdue, 8-6, in their first game of the day, but bounced back for a 2-1 triumph against UConn later in the day.
Here is a closer look at each game.
Game One – Purdue 8, Marist 6
The Boilermakers opened the scoring with one run in the top of the first, but the Red Foxes responded with three in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Miranda Perez had an RBI double, while freshman Ali Milam and senior Rebecca Freeman each added RBI singles.
However, Purdue grabbed the lead back for good the following an inning. The big blow was a bases-clearing double by Mallory Baker with two outs. Purdue added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to extend its lead to 8-5. Korak’s RBI single in the bottom of the inning made the score 8-6. The Red Foxes brought the tying run to the plate with none out, but were unable to draw any closer.
Korak finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Perez was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, and sophomore Casey Page walked twice and scored twice. Sophomore Brooke Peterson (0-1) started and took the loss. Sophomore Kallen Leeseberg struck out five and allowed only two hits in 4.2 innings of relief. The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth, when Freeman drew a bases-loaded walk, which brought home Korak. Marist added its second run in the sixth. Junior Gabrielle Kelliher doubled to lead off the innings, and came home on freshman Jade Sinskul’s RBI groundout.
UConn cut Marist’s lead to one on a double by Emily Cutler in the bottom of the sixth. The Huskies had runners on second and third with one out, but Van Alphen shut the door with a strikeout and flyout. UConn had the tying run on third with one out in the seventh, but Van Alphen kept the Huskies off the scoreboard by inducing a lineout and comebacker.
Kelliher and junior Kourtney Paul each had two hits for the Red Foxes. Starter Chelsea Eckert (1-1) took the loss.
