NORTHRIDGE, California – After losing to the Cal State Northridge Matadors 12-6 in the second game of the UCSD Triton Invite Feb. 11th, the Marist water polo team enacted revenge and pulled out a come from behind 11-10 3OT victory over the Matadors on Tuesday.

With the win, the Red Foxes stand at 8-10 and wrap up the non-conference portion of their 2017 schedule with the program’s best non-conference record since 2012-13.

Senior Nastassia McGlothlin scored the game winning goal with 54 seconds left in the sudden death third overtime, her third of the game to go along with two assists and one steal. Junior Diana Carballo chipped in three goals, one assist and two steals and freshman Justine Castro finished with three goals and three steals. Sophomore Ariana Singer chipped in one goal, one assist and two steals, sophomore Grace Doerfler finished with one goal and one drawn ejection and senior co-captain Amanda Amorosa finished with four assists to give her 141 in her career, one behind Shelby Rinker (2010-13) for third all-time in program history.

Junior Jessica Hermosillo started the game and goal and played the first half, finishing with four goals against, one save and one steal. Freshman Carsen Horvatich played the remainder of the game and finished with six goals against, eight saves and one steal. 

Cal State Northridge opened the game with four unanswered goals in the first quarter by McKenzie Pollei (2), Emily Fuller and Amy Yule and after the opening eight minutes it was 4-0 Matadors.

McGlothlin got the Red Foxes on the board at the 3:13 mark of the second quarter with an assist to Amorosa and shortly after, Singer scored with an assist from McGlothlin and at the end of the first half it was 4-2 Cal State Northridge.

Just 11 seconds into the third, Castro scored her first of the game to bring Marist within one off an assist from Amorosa and 1:34 later, Carballo scored, assisted by Singer to even the score at 4-4. Yule’s second of the game 39 seconds later gave the Matadors back the lead and with 4:27 remaining, Alexis Elias regained the two goal lead for Cal State Northridge on the powerplay. However, the Red Foxes answered back 22 seconds later on Castro’s second of the game and 43 seconds later, Carballo scored off an assist from Amorosa tied the game up at 6-6. With just three seconds left in the third quarter, Madeline Sanchez regained the lead for the Matadors and with eight minutes left it was 7-6 Cal State Northridge.

Two minutes into the final quarter, Pollei gave the Matadors their third two goal lead of the game. The score remained the same until 1:03 left in the game when Carballo scored, assisted by McGlothlin to make it 8-7. McGlothlin then notched her second of the game with 0:37 left to even the score and the two teams headed into overtime all tied at 8-8.

Doerfler gave the Red Foxes their first lead of the game just 16 seconds into the first overtime and Castro found the back of the net off an assist from Amorosa with 2:23 left in the second overtime to give Marist a 10-8 lead. However, the Matadors would answer right back with goals by Shannon Hovanesian and Sanchez with four seconds left to even the score at 10-10.

Both teams then headed into a sudden death third overtime period where McGlothlin secured the 11-10 victory with a goal with 0:53 left in the period.
