HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Marist softball team was defeated by Hawaii, 5-0, on Sunday night at the Spring Fling Tournament.
The Red Foxes had four hits in the game, led by junior shortstop Miranda Perez, who went 2-for-3 with a double and a single. Sophomore center fielder Casey Page and freshman first baseman Ali Milam each singled. Marist had two runners on with two outs in two innings – second and third in the third, first and second in the fifth.
Sophomore Megan Beiermeister held the Rainbow Wahine scoreless through three innings. In the fourth, Hawaii opened the scoring on a two-run infield single by designated player Callee Heen. Catcher Heather Cameron added an RBI groundout later in the inning. Hawaii expanded its lead to 5-0 an inning later as second baseman Sarah Muzik drove in a run on an infield single, and center fielder Danielle Garcielita scored on a wild pitch.
Beiermeister (4-2) took the loss, and went four-plus innings. Senior Jayne Oberdorf pitched two innings of relief, was not charged with a run, and allowed just one hit.
Dana Thomsen (6-2) pitched a complete game for Hawaii with seven strikeouts.
Marist is now 9-8 on the season. Hawaii is 15-9.
The Red Foxes return to action on Wednesday, when they begin a stretch of six games in four days at the Rainbow Wahine Classic, also hosted by Hawaii. Marist will face Purdue (5 p.m. EST) and Connecticut (10 p.m. EST) on Wednesday.
