TEMPE, Arizona – In its last non-conference tournament of the year, the #23 Marist water polo team went 1-1 to open the Arizona State Invitational, beating the La Verne Leopards 10-5 before falling to the #7 Arizona State Sun Devils 15-6 on Saturday.

With the results, the Red Foxes stand at 7-9 on the season.

Senior co-captain Amanda Amorosa led Marist on the day, finishing with three goals and three assists. With the three assists, Amorosa passed Allison Hamby's (2012-15) 135 career assists for fourth place all-time in program history. Sophomores Ariana Singer and Susan Cantoni each chipped in two goals, one assist and four steals, and freshman Carolyn Gauvin scored two goals and had one steal. Sophomore Caoimhe Whitebloom scored her first goal of the season and finished with two assists, freshman Justine Castro finished with one goal, one assist and nine steals, freshman Anais Mathes had one goal, one assist and four steals and junior Diana Carballo had one goal and four steals. Senior Nastassia McGlothlin chipped in one goal and four steals and freshman Bree Marmion had one goal.

Junior Jessica Hermosillo played four of the eight quarters in net and finished with 15 goals against and seven saves, while freshman Carsen Horvatich played the second half against the Leopards and one quarter against the Sun Devils and finished with five goals against, 10 saves and two steals and sophomore Hope Vickers played one quarter and finished with four goals against.


Looking to start the weekend on the right foot, the Red Foxes fell behind early against the Leopards as two goals by Guarina Garcia gave La Verne the early 2-0 lead with 2:58 left in the first quarter. Marist answered with a goal by Castro with 30 seconds left in the quarter and at the end of one it was 2-1 Leopards.

The Red Foxes took the 3-2 lead with two straight goals to open the second quarter by Amorosa before a third goal by Garcia evened the score at 3-3 with 2:14 remaining. The Leopards retook the lead off a goal by Stephanie Rosero and at the end of two quarters it was 4-3 La Verne.

A goal by Cantoni at the 4:51 mark of the third quarter evened the score before Singer and Carballo scored gave Marist the 6-4 lead with one quarter remaining.

McGlothlin made it a 7-4 lead with 7:41 left to play before Rosero trimmed the deficit to 7-5 with 5:56 remaining. However, that was as close as the Leopards would get as Singer, Marmion and Mathes scored to close out the game and give the Red Foxes the 10-5 victory.


Looking for its first victory over a top 10 opponent this season, Marist fell behind early, as the Sun Devils scored the first six goals in the opening 10:32 to hold the 6-0 lead with 5:28 left in the second quarter. Doerfler got the Red Foxes on the board first but Arizona State closed out the half with four more goals to lead 10-1 with two quarters remaining.

Cantoni made it 10-2 with 2:29 left in the third quarter but five straight goals by the Sun Devils made it 14-2 before Amorosa scored with 5:42 remaining in the game. One more Arizona State goal and two goals by Whitebloom, her first of the year and Gauvin brought the final score to 15-6 Sun Devils.

Up next, the Red Foxes close out the ASU Invitational with a matchup against #1 Stanford on Sunday (12 PM).
