HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Marist softball team suffered a 5-3 loss to Toledo in its first game of the Spring Fling Tournament, hosted by the University of Hawaii, on Friday night. Junior shortstop Miranda Perez led the Red Foxes offensively by going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Red Foxes got on the scoreboard first with one out in the top of the second on a solo homer by freshman first baseman Ali Milam, her second of the season. Toledo took the lead with single runs in the third and fourth, but Marist went back in front in the top of the fifth. Junior left fielder Kourtney Paul, junior third baseman Brittany Colombo, and sophomore center fielder Casey Page led off the inning with consecutive singles, which loaded the bases. Perez followed with the Red Foxes’ fourth straight hit, a two-run single which gave Marist a 3-2 lead.

However, Toledo went in front for good with three runs in the home half of the sixth. Third baseman Katie Cozy had an RBI double, while pinch-hitter Maddie Emery and second baseman Chandler Rice each had RBI singles.

Sophomore Megan Beiermeister (4-1) got the loss in relief. Beiermeister struck out two in 2.2 innings. Senior Jayne Oberdorf started, and struck out two in 3.1 innings. Oberdorf pitched out of a bases loaded jam with one out in the second. Heather Webb (4-6) pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief and earned the victory.

Marist is now 9-5 on the season. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Red Foxes, who have not lost a game by more than three runs this season. Toledo is now 9-15.

The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, when they continue tournament play with games against Charleston Southern (7 p.m. EST) and Hawaii (9 p.m. EST).
