BALTIMORE, Maryland – The Marist softball team swept Coppin State on Sunday to complete a 4-0 weekend at the UMBC First Pitch Kickoff Classic. The Red Foxes prevailed by scores of 8-0 in six innings and 11-3, and have now won five straight games.

The Red Foxes finished with a total of 28 hits on the day. Junior Gabrielle Kelliher had a team-best four, while Kelliher and senior Janna Korak each registered a team-high four RBIs on the day.

Here is a closer look at both games.

Game One – Marist 8, Coppin State 0 (6 innings)

Sophomore Kallen Leeseberg (1-2) tossed the first shutout of her career. Leeseberg struck out nine against just two walks, and scattered eight hits. She threw 67 of her 104 pitches for strikes.

Marist scored first in the top of the second. Junior Kourtney Paul started a two-out rally with a single, and was brought home on a double by freshman Jade Sinskul. The Red Foxes then exploded for a six-run fourth. Korak led off the inning with a home run, and sophomore Brandi Coon’s two-out RBI single made the score 3-0. Kelliher followed with a grand slam on a seven-pitch at bat. Junior Miranda Perez then scored on an infield single in the sixth to close out the scoring.

Kelliher finished the game 3-for-4. Sinskul and sophomore Madison Lee had two hits apiece as the Red Foxes finished the game with 11.

Second baseman Megan Narvaez and right fielder Camille Nowak finished with two hits apiece for Coppin State. Arianna Alderete (0-2), who started and went the first 3.2 innings, took the loss.

Game Two – Marist 11, Coppin State 3

Marist got on the scoreboard in the first inning. Sophomore Casey Page drew a leadoff walk, and then scored on the front end of a double steal attempt. Coppin State tied the score in its half of the second. The score remained tied at one through three innings, but the Red Foxes scored multiple runs in each of the last four innings.

In the top of the fourth, senior catcher Rebecca Freeman scored on an error following a Kelliher double. Kelliher then came home on a sacrifice fly by freshman third baseman Amanda Sartori. The Red Foxes added two more in the fifth when Page scored on a passed ball, and Korak delivered an RBI single. In the sixth, Marist scored four times thanks to RBI singles by Perez, junior Brittany Colombo, and freshman Ali Milam plus a bases-loaded walk by Korak. An RBI single by Sinskul and RBI fielder’s choice by Korak in the seventh accounted for Marist’s final runs.

Marist had 17 hits in the contest. Perez went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Korak drove in a team-high three runs, and Page scored a team-best three runs. For Coppin State, shortstop Cloe’ Ochoa went 3-for-3 with an RBI.

In the circle, sophomore Megan Beiermeister (4-0) earned the win and struck out four in five innings. Sophomore Brooke Peterson struck out two in the final two innings. Starter Megan Narvaez (0-2) took the loss.

Marist is now 9-4 on the season. Coppin State is 2-14.

Marist will play its next 10 games in Hawaii as part of two tournaments. The Red Foxes start with four games in three days as part of the University of Hawaii Spring Fling, which begins on Friday when Marist takes on Toledo at 9:30 p.m. Eastern.
