BALTIMORE, Maryland – The Marist softball team won a pair of games on Saturday against UMBC in the Retrievers’ First Pitch Kickoff Classic. The Red Foxes prevailed by scores of 4-3 and 7-2 to extend their winning streak to three.

Here is a closer look at both games.

Game One – Marist 4, UMBC 3

The Red Foxes opened the scoring in the top of the second when junior third baseman Brittany Colombo drew a bases-loaded walk, which forced home senior right fielder Janna Korak. Sophomore center fielder Casey Page scored on a wild pitch the following inning.

In the fourth, Marist expanded its lead to 4-0. Colombo reached on a throwing error, which enabled both freshman first baseman Ali Milam and sophomore second baseman Brandi Coon to score.

UMBC mounted a comeback in the late innings. In the fifth, Tori Alexander’s two-out solo homer got the Retrievers on the scoreboard. The following game, a two-out, two-run triple by designated player Carly Lesko brought UMBC to within one.  However, sophomore Megan Beiermeister stranded Lesko at third, and then pitched a scoreless seventh.

Page and Coon each finished with two hits and a run scored. Senior Jayne Oberdorf (1-2) went five-plus innings, allowed just three hits, and struck out three for the win. Beiermeister got the final six outs for her first save of the year. Nicole Casagrand (2-2), who started and went the first two innings, took the loss.

Game Two – Marist 7, UMBC 2

The Red Foxes erupted for a five-run second inning with six hits and 10 batters coming to the plate. Freshman third baseman Amanda Sartori, sophomore designated player Madison Lee, and junior shortstop Miranda Perez all had RBI singles, and senior catcher Rebecca Freeman added a two-run single with two outs.

In the third, Marist added another as Milam singled, stole second, and scored on a two-out single by Sartori. The Red Foxes scored their final run in the fifth as Milam drew a leadoff walk and came home on an RBI groundout by Lee. Lesko’s two-run double in the bottom of the fifth accounted for the Retrievers’ two runs.

Sartori and Lee each finished with three hits and two RBIs, while Freeman, Korak, and Milam had a pair of hits apiece. Marist outhit UMBC by a 14-7 margin. Red-shirt Jessica Van Alphen (3-1) went the distance and struck out five for the win. Jessica Holte (1-5), who started and went the first two innings, took the loss for UMBC.

Marist is now 7-4; UMBC is 4-13.

The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday, when they conclude play in the UMBC First Pitch Kickoff Classic with a pair of games at Coppin State. First pitch of game one is scheduled for noon, with the second game to begin shortly afterward.
