JERSEY CITY, New Jersey - The Marist men’s basketball team was defeated by a score of 71-46 against Saint Peter’s at the Yanitelli Center on Tuesday night in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game.

“Saint Peter’s is tough-minded, and they execute,” Marist head coach Mike Maker said. “They stay true to who they are, and they beat us in every phase today. All the credit goes to them.”

Red-shirt senior guard Khallid Hart led the Red Foxes with 12 points, followed by sophomore guard Brian Parker with 10. Freshman center Tobias Sjoberg, who returned after missing the previous two games due to illness, led the Red Foxes in rebounds with five in 13 minutes off the bench.

Senior center Kentrall Brooks scored the Red Foxes’ first four points, and a three-pointer by sophomore forward Kristinn Palsson gave Marist a 7-4 lead at the 16:04 mark of the first half. From there, Saint Peter’s went on a 24-4 run over the next 12:31, which included a scoreless stretch of 7:27 for Marist. The Peacocks led 30-16 after the first 20 minutes.

The Red Foxes scored the first four points of the second half to cut their deficit to 10, and were within 11 twice in the first five minutes of the second half. The Peacocks answered with a 17-3 run over a stretch of 6:11 to put the game out of reach. Saint Peter’s ran its lead to as much as 28 in the second half.

Cavon Baker led all scorers with 20 points in 22 minutes off the bench for the Peacocks. Quadir Welton had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Marist shot 14-for-46 (.304) from the field, while Saint Peter’s shot 24-for-50 (.480). The Peacocks held a 38-22 edge on the boards. Both teams committed less than 10 turnovers (Saint Peter’s eight, Marist nine).

Marist is now 6-21 overall and 3-13 in the MAAC. Saint Peter’s is 15-12 overall and 11-6 in the MAAC.
