POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Following two defeats in day one of the UC San Diego Triton Invitational, the Marist water polo team bounced back to win its final two games and claim 13th place in the 16 team tournament on Sunday.
The Red Foxes defeated the Santa Clara Broncos 8-5 in the first game, before beating the Cal State East Bay Pioneers in the 13th place game by a final score of 9-7. With the wins, Marist improves to 5-6 on the season.
Freshman Justin Castro led the Red Foxes on the day with three goals and three assists, while senior co-captain Amanda Amorosa chipped in three goals and one assist and sophomore Susan Cantoni had three goals. Senior co-captain Jocelyn McQuade had two goals and four assists, senior Nastassia McGlothlin and freshman Lexi Puhl had two goals and one assist each, sophomore Ariana Singer had one goal and two assists, sophomore Grace Doerfler had one goal and junior Diana Carballo had one assist.
VS Santa Clara
After starting the tournament out on the wrong foot with two losses, Marist looked to start new on day two with a fresh effort versus the Broncos.
It was Santa Clara that found the back of the net first with a goal at the 4:34 mark, however, two goals by Castro, both assisted by McQuade at 0:35 and 0:01 in the first quarter gave the Red Foxes the early 2-1 lead.
The second quarter was all about defense as Marist held the Broncos scoreless. Two goals by Amorosa, the last assisted by McGlothlin, extended the lead and at the half it was 4-1 Red Foxes.
A goal by Santa Clara just 1:54 into the third quarter, trimmed the deficit to 4-2 however, Marist answered back before the quarter ended with a goal by Doerfler and with eight minutes left in the game it was 5-2 Red Foxes.
Both teams traded goals to open the fourth with Amorosa finding the back of the net for Marist, assisted by McQuade. Marist extended its lead to 8-3 off goals by McGlothlin and Puhl, assisted by Amorosa and Castro respectively, with 5:21 left. The Broncos were able to trim the deficit with two goals but it was not enough as the final horn sounded with the Red Foxes emerging victorious 8-5.
VS Cal State East Bay
Following the back win earlier in the day, Marist look to end the tournament on a winning note vs. the Pioneers.
McGlothlin got the Red Foxes on the board at 5:35 of the first quarter but Cal State East Bay responded 4:20 later and at the end of the opening frame it was 1-1.
Both teams traded goals twice to open the second with Cantoni scoring a 5 meter and an even strength goal, the last assisted by Castro, and with 5:19 left it was all even at 3-3. A third consecutive goal by Cantoni, assisted by McQuade, gave Marist the lead for good at 3:49 and another goal by Singer, assisted by Carballo, made it 5-3 Red Foxes at the half.
A goal by Puhl at 6:03 opened the third quarter scoring but the Pioneers quickly answered back with a goal 18 seconds later. Marist extended the lead to 8-4 with goals by Castro and McQude, assisted by Puhl and Singer respectively, at the 3:57 but three straight goals by Cal State East Bay made it a one goal game with 1:38 remaining. The Red Foxes were not to be denied the victory though as a goal by McQuade assisted by Singer sealed the victory 9-7.
Up next, Marist will have two weeks off before traveling to Cambridge, MA for the Harvard Invitational on Saturday, March 4thand Sunday, March 5th. The Red Foxes will play Brown (8:45 AM), #11 Princeton (12:30 PM) and #21 Harvard (8 PM) on Saturday and the University of Toronto (11:45 AM) on Sunday.
