SAN DIEGO, California – The Marist water polo team lost its opening two games at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Saturday, falling to the #6 University of Michigan Wolverines 17-4 and the #22 Cal State University Northridge Matadors 12-6.
With the two losses, the Red Foxes drop to 3-6 on the season.
Junior Diana Carballo and senior Nastassia McGlothlin led the Red Foxes on the afternoon with two goals and one assist each while sophomore Susan Cantoni scored two goals. Senior co-captain Jocelyn McQuade finished with one goal and two assists, sophomores Grace Doerfler and Ariana Singer had one goal and one assist each, senior co-captain Amanda Amorosa chipped in one goal and freshman Bree Marmion recorded her first career assist. Freshman Carsen Horvatich played in net vs the Wolverines, finishing with 17 goals against and nine saves and the opening two quarters against the Matadors, where she surrendered eight goals against. Junior Jessica Hermosillo played the final two quarters in goal against CSUN and finished with four goals against.
Facing their second highest ranked opponent of the season, Marist looked to get on the board early but were held scoreless and Michigan scored three times in the opening quarter to take the early 3-0 lead.
The second quarter didn’t get any better as the Wolverines scored four more times in the opening 2:06, before Cantoni got the Red Foxes on the board with a goal at the 3:22 mark off an assist by McQuade. Michigan added two more goals before the quarter ended and at the half it was 9-1 Wolverines.
Marist was again held scoreless in the third quarter as Michigan added two more goals and with eight minutes left in the game it was 11-1 Wolverines.
The fourth quarter saw the highest offensive output for the Red Foxes as McGlothlin and Carballo (2) found the back of the net but six goals by Michigan gave the Wolverines the 17-4 victory.
Looking to bounce back in its second game of the day, Marist again fell behind early as the Matadors scored twice in the opening quarter to take the early 2-0 lead.
CSUN scored again to open the second but a goal by Doerfler off an assist from Carballo trimmed the deficit to 3-1 with 7:18 to go in the half. That was as close as the Red Foxes would get however, as the Matadors scored four unanswered goals to take a 7-1 lead. McGlothlin scored at the 2:33 mark to make it 7-2 but another goal by CSUN before the half made it 8-2 with 16 minutes left to play.
Following a goal by the Matadors to open the third quarter, McQuade scored off an assist by Singer which was then followed by a goal from Amorosa. CSUN scored with :01 left in the quarter and with eight minutes left it was 10-4 Matadors.
Down by six, Marist found the back of the net twice in the final frame, off goals by Cantoni assisted by McGlothlin and Singer, assisted by Doerfler. However, two goals by CSUN gave the Matadors the 12-6 victory.
Up next, the Red Foxes will square off against Santa Clara at 11 AM on Sunday before facing the winner/loser of Sonoma State vs Cal State East Bay depending on their result vs. Santa Clara.
