BUFFALO, New York - The Marist women’s swimming and diving team built up its lead in front of all 10 teams on the second night of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships on Feb. 9. The Red Foxes have 279 points following four first-place finishes and are ahead of second place Rider by 48 points.

Strong distance and freestyle swimming propelled Marist in the pool beginning with junior Sara Nestrowitz’s winning time of exactly five minutes in the 500-yard freestyle. The Red Foxes had five finalists in the event including juniors Melanie Newton (fourth; 5:03.32) and Shannon Gordon (fifth; 5:05.68). Senior Meredith Wurtz posted a time of 23.49 seconds to win gold in the 50-yard freestyle and anchored the first place 200-yard freestyle relay squad (1:35.14). The group included junior Georgia Goldman, senior Kelsey Forster, and Nestrowitz.

In the first women’s diving event junior Megan Berardelli took the top spot on the 3-meter board. She led at the end of nearly all six rounds and posted a final score of 291.35 points. Sophomore Grace Casolo placed sixth in the finals (202.95 points).      

The Red Foxes will be back in action at 10 a.m. tomorrow for preliminaries in the 400-yard IM to begin Day Three. Follow live results from the MAAC or through the Meet Mobile app.

PRELIMINARIES

 

Marist had two top finishers in preliminary heats on the second day of the MAAC Championships. Nestrowitz clocked in at 5:02.24 in the 500-yard freestyle and Wurtz sprinted to a time of 23.55 seconds in the 50-yard event. Senior Breann Lydon was the first Red Fox to qualify for the 200-yard IM final with a time of 2:09.63.

On the 3-meter board Berardelli had the second highest score with 245.25 points. Casolo also stamped her ticket to the final with 200.45 points.
