WEST POINT, New York - The Marist women’s lacrosse team began the 2017 regular season with a one-goal loss to the Army West Point Black Knights on Feb. 11. The Red Foxes led 10-9 at halftime, but Army West Point prevailed 13-12.

In the first 15 minutes of her collegiate career, freshman Samantha Mehalick scored four goals. She ended the afternoon with a team-high four ground balls. Sophomore Hailey Wagner contributed six points on three goals and three assists and six different Red Foxes found the back of the net.

Both teams traded goals for the first four scores of the contest before Black Knights junior Rachel Hornick got hot and put Army West Point ahead. Marist got momentum back by scoring six of the next seven goals on a run that included a pair of free position goals and three consecutive assists from Wagner. The scoring spree put Marist ahead 8-5 by the 12:05 mark of the first half. Two more goals by Wagner kept Army West Point at bay and the Red Foxes in front 10-9.

The second half belonged to the Black Knights, which tied the game for the sixth and final time with a free position goal with 24:21 left. The Red Foxes hung around despite being down by two, countering with another free position score from junior Lauren Mazza at 3:48. Marist maintained possession in the Army West Point zone, but Mehalick did not convert on two free position chances and the Red Foxes did not recover.

Hornick finished with a game-high seven goals while freshman Maddie Burns picked up the victory by making eight saves in 42 minutes. She also scooped up five ground balls.

The Red Foxes outshot the Black Knights 33-28 but Marist went 4-for-10 from the 8-meter arc.

Marist will host Stony Brook at 4 p.m. Feb. 21 in its home opener. The Seawolves were ranked no. 6 in the 2017 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association Division I Preseason Poll.
