POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Senior quarterback Chuckie Looney (Ocala, Fla.) of the Marist football team was named Pioneer Football League (PFL) Offensive Player of the Week on Sunday.
Looney set a single-game program record with five touchdown passes in Marist's 35-33 loss at San Diego on Saturday. He completed 19 out of 33 passes for 298 yards, and did not commit a turnover. He added 11 rushing yards.
Three of Looney's touchdown passes covered at least 29 yards, including a 66-yard pass to senior wide receiver Armani Martin (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), who tied a single-game program record with three touchdown catches. Looney also threw a touchdown pass to Martin on a fourth-and-goal from the San Diego 9 with 5:19 to play.
Looney became the first player in the PFL this season, and the 15th in the FCS ranks, to throw five touchdown passes in a game. It was the fifth time in program history that a Marist quarterback threw at least four touchdown passes in a game, and Looney has three of these performance.
This is the second time this season that Looney has garnered a PFL weekly award. He was named PFL Co-Offensive Player of the Week after throwing four touchdown passes at Georgetown on Sept. 14.
On the season, Looney has thrown 15 touchdown passes against just three interceptions. He has completed 55.9 percent of his passes and thrown for 1,438 yards in six games. Looney has broken the program's career records for touchdown passes, passing yards, completions and attempts, the latter two of which occurred in Saturday's game.
Marist (3-3 overall, 2-1 PFL) returns to action next Saturday with a PFL contest at Davidson. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. The game will conclude a stretch in which the Red Foxes play five out of six on the road.
