POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist men’s basketball team will hold its first official practice of the 2013-14 season on Friday afternoon. The Red Foxes open the season on Friday, Nov. 8 at Stony Brook. Their first home game at McCann Arena will be Sunday, Nov. 10 against Elon.
This is the first season that college basketball teams are allowed to start practice 42 days, with up to 30 practices in that period, ahead of their first regular season game. Previously, teams were given 30 days, with 24 practices.
“We are very excited to get underway,” Marist head coach Jeff Bower said. “The team has done an outstanding job in preparing themselves for this day. We look forward to establishing habits and making rapid progress throughout this extended training camp.”
Bower, announced as the new men’s basketball head coach back in April, is looking to lead Marist after a 2012-13 campaign that saw the Red Foxes finish 10-21 overall and 6-12 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The Red Foxes ended the regular season on a strong note, winning five of their final seven games, including a thrilling 105-104 double-overtime victory at Iona, who went on to win the MAAC Championship.
The Red Foxes do return four of their five starters from last year, including leading scorer and All-MAAC Third Team member, Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) who averaged 16.7 PPG. Marist will also look to the senior leadership of forwards Adam Kemp (Sherrill, N.Y.) (10.4 PPG, 8.6 RPG, 2.2 BPG), also a member of the All-MAAC Third Team and Jay Bowie (Tampa, Fla.) (9.4 PPG, .527 FG%). Junior Isaiah Morton (Vineland, N.J.), who started 24 games last season at point guard, returns as Marist’s assists leader, dishing out 120 assists as a sophomore. Overall, the Red Foxes return 11 letter-winners from a year ago.
“We are all excited to get into practice,” Kemp said. “We had a countdown in the locker room for the last 20 days until today. We are excited for the opportunity to get started earlier this year than other years with the rules being a bit different. Everyone is upbeat right now, looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish. We had a great last couple of weeks with work outs and lifting and we are ready to bring it all together to see what progress we can make going into the first game.”
“One of our team goals is to get better every day and make sure we come to practice to compete. We come into practice with the mindset of not just getting through today, but we are going to come into the gym and beat today.”
