NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Marist men’s tennis team clinched its fifth consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Regular Season Championship with a 4-3 road win at Niagara on Saturday. The Red Foxes also completed their fourth straight undefeated conference season.
Marist (15-3, 6-0 MAAC) swept the doubles’ point, winning at all three positions. Billy Bishop (Houston, Texas) and Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) won 8-4 at the top spot while Trym Nagelstad (Oslo, Norway) and Fredrik Bjerke (Oslo, Norway) took the second doubles’ match 8-5. Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) and Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) completed the sweep with an 8-2 win at third doubles.
Klassen got his second win of the day at second singles, defeating his opponent 6-4, 6-4 after Niagara had taken the win at first singles to even the match.
Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) won at fourth singles by a 6-4, 6-1 score and Nagelstad won the clinching point with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at sixth singles.
“Excellent match today and Dalen Klassen really showed up today for us, in both singles and doubles,” head coach Tim Smith said. “We are MAAC champions and we look forward to competing in the MAAC Tournament next weekend.”
Marist, the top seed, will play fourth-seeded Loyola in the MAAC Semifinals next Saturday, April 27 at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J. The Red Foxes swept the Greyhounds last weekend by a 7-0 score.
