Marist Baseball Cruises Past Holy Cross

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist baseball team defeated Holy Cross 17-5 in a non-conference game at McCann Baseball Field on Wednesday. The Red Foxes scored multiple runs in an inning five times, with three runs in the second, two in the third, four in the fifth, three in the sixth and five in the seventh.

Junior designated hitter Zachary Passerelle (Sparta, N.J.) drove in seven runs. Passerelle went 3-for-4, had a sacrifice fly in the third, two-run singles in the fifth and sixth, and a two-run double in the seventh. Junior third baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) went 3-for-3 with five runs scored. Sophomore left fielder Steve Laurino (Carle Place, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Senior shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.) scored three runs.

Sophomore right-hander Chris Napolitano (Wall, N.J.) earned the win on the mound to improve to 2-1. Napolitano, who went the first five innings, allowed one run and struck out six. In the top of the third, Holy Cross had one run in, and runners on second and third with one out trailing 3-1. Napolitano struck out the next two hitters to end the threat, and permitted just one baserunner in his final two innings of work.

On the day, Marist pitchers struck out 12, and issued zero walks. Freshman right-hander Erik Bauer (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) and junior left-hander Jordan Eich (Spencerport, N.Y.) each fanned three in two innings of work. Eich retired all six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings.

Marist's 17 runs were a season high, and its 17 hits tied a season best. All nine starters recorded at least one hit.

Holy Cross right fielder Evan Ocello and center fielder Brandon Cipolla each went 3-for-4. Starter Colin Brown, who went the first three innings, took the loss and is 0-1.

Marist, which started the season 4-7, now stands at 14-9. Holy Cross fell to 11-15.

Marist returns to action with a conference series at Manhattan this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader at Van Cortlandt Park starting at noon on Saturday, followed by a single game at noon on Sunday.
