WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Marist men's tennis team won its first match of its spring break trip to the nation's capital, defeating the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), a Division II program, by a 7-2 score.
“Today was a good win over a good UDC program. They were previously undefeated at 4-0 this year and stand on top of their conference,” head coach Tim Smith said. “I was very pleased with our two newest players, Trym Nagelstad and Fredrik Bjerke.”
Nagelstad (Oslo, Norway) and Bjerke (Oslo, Norway) each won a pair of matches for the Red Foxes on Wednesday. They first teamed up to win at the second doubles' position 8-2, helping Marist clinch the doubles' point. Joris Van Eck (Ospel, The Netherlands) and Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) also won at the third slot, 8-2.
Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) lost a tough match at the top singles' position, 6-4, 7-5.
After that however, the Red Foxes did not drop a set. Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) easily defeated his opponent in the second slot 6-2, 6-0.
Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) worked hard for a good win at third singles', winning 6-4, 7-5.
Nagelstad easily dispatched his opponent 6-1, 6-0 and Bjerke won in similar fashion, 6-0, 6-4.
