WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Marist women's tennis team fell in a pair of non-conference matchups this weekend as both Quinnipiac and Army defeated the Red Foxes, 7-0 and 7-0. Both matches which were hosted at Army's Lichtenberg Tennis Center saw Marist compete hard and earn victories in doubles action.
Versus Quinnipiac on Friday, the number three doubles team of Kelsey Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) and Sabrina Tahir (Yonkers, N.Y.) defeated the Bobcats' duo of Chupa and Launie, 8-6.
Melissa Carlay (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) performed well in her number three singles defeat to Sarah Viebrock. The freshman won a combined seven sets before eventually falling by a final score of 6-4, 6-3.
On Saturday versus the host Black Knights, senior Joana Sun (Mansfield, Mass.) and freshman Karly Pang (Kaneohe, Hawaii) earned the victory in first doubles action over Army's Paul and Colton pairing 8-7 (9-7).
In singles competition, Carlay and Marielle Campbell (Patterson, N.Y.) each forced tie-breaking third sets at the #3 and #4 positions. Versus Army's Margaret Iliev, Carlay lost the initial first set 7-6 (5) before coming back in the second set 7-5. In the tie-breaker, Iliev held on for the 10-8 victory. At #4 singles, Campball faced off with Haley O'Connor. They split the first two sets 6-4 for Campbell and 7-6 (4) for O'Connor. In the tie-breaker, the Black Knight player once again held on for a 10-8 win.
The Red Foxes be off from completion for two weeks before heading to Florida and participating in three non-conference matches between March 17 and 20 in Orlando.
