Water Polo Rides Second Half To 11-7 Win Over DDO

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist water polo team completed a 3-0 weekend with a 11-7 victory Sunday morning over DDO to wrap up the Marist Invite at the McCann Natatorium. It was the Red Foxes second win in as many days over the Canadian club team.

Shelby Rinker (Lansdale, Pa.) led the offense with five points on three goals and two assists. Robyn Crabtree (Cutler Bay, Fla.) and Anna-Lena Hathaway (Pasadena, Calif.) each had three points and Ellie Hoffman (Pasadena, Calif.) also scored twice. Brooke Else (Lansdale, Pa.) had a team-high three steals. Rebecca Thomas (Cape Town, South Africa) played the first half in goal, making seven saves and only allowing two goals. Skyler Henry (San Diego, Calif.) played the second half and made six saves.

After Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) gave the Red Foxes (6-4) a 1-0 lead after the first quarter, the offense took off in the second quarter, scoring four straight goals in the first 4:14 to take a 5-0 lead. Hoffman and Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.) scored 37 seconds apart to expand the lead to 3-0. Just over a minute later, Crabtree and Rinker found the back of the net 39 seconds apart to complete the run. Rinker's goal came just one second after a DDO ejection.

DDO fought back however, scoring six of the next seven goals to tie the score at 6-6 with 3:01 remaining in the third quarter. However, goals by Heather Fellmeth (North Wales, Pa.) and Hoffman in a 40 second span gave Marist a two-goal lead after three quarters at 8-6.

The Red Foxes expanded their lead back to five goals by scoring the first three goals of the fourth quarter. Hathaway scored the first two and Rinker completed her hat trick to bring the score to 11-6.

A DDO goal in the final minute provided the final margin.

Marist heads up to Hartwick next Saturday for a pair of games. The Red Foxes will play a neutral game against Gannon at noon before taking on Hartwick in a 6 p.m. contest.
