NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Marist men's tennis team opened the Yale 3-Way tournament with a 4-1 victory over Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon.
Trym Nagelstad (Oslo, Norway) was perfect on the day, winning in his debut at the first singles' position by a decisive 6-1, 6-4 score. He also paired with fellow classmate and countryman Fredrik Bjerke (Oslo, Norway) for a convincing 8-3 win at the top doubles' slot.
The pairing of Joris Van Eck (Ospel, The Netherlands) and Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) earned an 8-3 win at the third position to clinch the doubles' point for the Red Foxes.
Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) and Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) both won their singles' matches at the fourth and fifth positions by straight sets scores of 6-4, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-2, respectively to seal the victory.
Both Bjerke and Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) were winning their individual matches, at the third and sixth slots, but did not finish with the match already decided.
"I am very pleased with how our doubles are starting to come together," head coach Tim Smith said. "Also, Trym continues to get better in both singles and doubles, getting a good win in his debut at #1 singles today."
Marist completes play at the tournament with dual matches against Yale and Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday.
