BOSTON - Sophomore David Marthy broke a seven-year-old school record and qualified for the IC4A Championships, and two distance runners also qualified for the IC4A meet, leading the Marist College men's track team at the Terrier Invitational, held Saturday night at Boston University.
Marthy placed 11th overall and first in his section in the 1,000-meter run, posting a time of 2:28.31. The time bettered the 2006 Marist College school record of 2:28.56, held by Bryan Quinn. The time also dipped under the IC4A standard of 2:28.95. Running in the fourth section, Marthy took the lead early and won the race uncontested over the final three laps.
"David did all the work by himself and really hung tough over the final lap,'' Marist Director of Track and Field Pete Colaizzo said. "Bryan's school record was a quality mark, which is why it lasted so long.''
In the 5,000-meter run, graduate student William Griffin and senior captain Arquimedes DelaCruz both qualified for the IC4As. Griffin placed fourth overall, the highest individual finish on the day for the Red Foxes, in a personal-best time of 14:29.43, two seconds faster than his outdoor school record in the event. DelaCruz was 11th in 14:39.54. Both times eclipsed the IC4A standard of 14:45.40.
It was a strong meet overall for the Red Foxes, as several other men earned personal-best times in their respective events: freshman Alex Cunningham (200-meter dash); sophomore Bryan Buttigieg (800-meter run); freshman Mark Vuono (1,000-meter run); freshman Charlie Ropes (mile run); junior Ryan Scrudato (3,000-meter run); freshman Johnny Lee (3,000-meter run); junior Billy Hild (5,000-meter run).
The men's track team will return to action on Friday at the Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York.
