Men's Soccer Closes 2012 Regular Season Home Slate This Weekend

Marist (5-7-1, 1-3 MAAC) will return home this weekend, as the Red Foxes will welcome Canisius and Niagara to Tenney Stadium in their final regular season home weekend. On Sunday prior their contest with Niagara, the Red Foxes will honor a quartet of athletes, who will be graduating in the spring: Stephan Brossard (Port Washington, N.Y.), Josh Faga (Rochester, N.Y.), Anthony Rozmus (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and Nick Gent (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.).

Last Time Out:

The Red Foxes lost a hard fought battle last Sunday to a Rider team who took advantage of their opportunities. Marist outshot Rider 16-9, with Stephan Brossard and Evan Southworth each accounting for four shots each. The Red Foxes, who had the majority of the possession, would give up two goals in the second half, one of which came off a controversial penalty kick. The Red Foxes kept pushing, but in the end could not rally up any goals.

Last Meeting:

In last year's regular season meetings on the road, the Red Foxes compiled an 0-1-1 record against their weekend opponents. In a tight, evenly-matched game, Marist finished with a 1-0 decision versus the Purple Eagles, while earning a 0-0 draw with the Golden Griffins on a rainy afternoon in Buffalo on Oct. 2, 2011. In both contests, the Red Foxes outshot their opponents, 14-12 against Niagara and 20-13 versus Canisius.

In the 2011 MAAC Quarterfinals, the fifth-seeded Red Foxes advanced over the fourth-seeded Purple Eagles on penalty kicks 4-1 after a scoreless 110 of regulation time. Marist was outshot 22-11, but goalkeeper Steve Skonieczny came up with a season-high eight saves to force the PKs.

Scouting Canisius:

Canisius comes into this weekend with a 7-4-2 mark overall, but winless in league with a 0-3 start. Defensively, the Golden Griffins are led in net by Kareem Gray who boasts a 1.52 gaa and .700 save percentage in his 12 starts. Offensively they are led by Gavin Falconer with nine goals and three assists. Will Hudson (4g-2a) and Denver Spearman (3g-3a) also aid the offense that averages 1.85 goals and 19 shots a game.

As a team, Canisius has outscored its opponents 24-20 and outshot them 247-167 on the year. The Golden Griffins have only played two pure road games, as they have competed in eight at home and three in neutral site tournaments.

 Scouting Niagara:

Niagara comes in to the weekend having yet to suffer a loss on the year with record of 8-0-4, and 2-0-1 in the MAAC. The Purple Eagles average just fewer than 2 goals a game, scoring 1.92 on an average of 12.2 shots a game. Callum Willmott, the reigning ECAC and MAAC Offensive Player of the Week is their leading point-getter with 17 points off of eight goals and an assist. Bryan Da Cruz and Rene De Zorzi also have helped out on the offensive side of the ball scoring three goals each. Niagara has relied on Brett Petricek in goal, who has posted an 0.85 goals against average, as well as a .851 save percentage.

As a team, Niagara has outscored its opponents 23-11 this season. Versus common non-conference opponents, the Purple Eagles have tied New Hampshire 0-0 on Sept. 7.
