POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's soccer team was ranked ninth in this week's NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women's Northeast Poll. The Red Foxes made the jump into the regional poll after going 2-0 over the past weekend against two of the top three teams in the MAAC standings, Fairfield and Iona.
On Friday against the then first place Stags, the Red Foxes (11-5, 5-0 MAAC) came out firing on all cylinders as 50 seconds into the game Marist was already up 1-0 on a sophomore Marjana Maksuti (Delmar, N.Y.) header off of a Samantha Panzner (Livingston, N.J.) corner kick. Marist would eventually take a 4-0 lead following two goals by sophomore Amanda Epstein (Jericho, N.Y.) and one by Rycke Guiney (Naperville, Ill.). A late Fairfield PK would make the final score 4-1.
On Sunday versus the third place Gaels a lone Epstein goal in the 23rd minute would prove to be sufficient as the defense backfield and goalkeeping of Andrea Wicks and Caitlin Landsman would keep Iona off of the scoreboard in a 1-0 victory.
The Red Foxes are the only MAAC team in the top 10 of the poll and one of only three non-Big East schools ranked. This is the team's second time being ranked in 2012.
Marist will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 19 at Manhattan. Kickoff between the Red Foxes and Jaspers is scheduled for 7 p.m.
