FLUSHING MEADOW, N.Y. - Four members of the Marist men's tennis team went 2-0 on Friday to advance to the semifinal round of their respective singles' flights at the USTA Invitational. Additionally, two combinations of Red Foxes advanced out of the Round of 16 in their doubles' flights.
A week after winning their flights at the Brown Invitational, Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) and Billy Bishop (Houston, Texas) continued their blistering starts to the season with two wins on Friday. Dube beat opponents from Fairfield and Army, only dropping two games the entire day, in move into the final four of Flight "F". Bishop had to come from behind in the Round of 16 of Flight "G" to defeat his foe from St. Francis 4-6, 6-2, 12-10. He then took care of his adversary from Yale 6-3, 6-1. In Flight "E", Joris Van Eck (Ospel, The Netherlands) and Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) each advanced to the semifinals with two straight set wins.
In doubles' action, the duos of Bishop and Klassen and Van Eck and Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) both advanced to their respective semifinals with wins over Sacred Heart and Fairfield, respectively.
"Its exciting to be playing at the site of the U.S. Open," Head Coach Tim Smith said. "Any time your team wins 11 matches in the first round with 17 teams, including all the Ivy League schools and SMU, you have to be pleased with the effort."
Singles' and doubles' action continues Saturday and Sunday.
