Men's Tennis Continues Hot Start With 14 Wins Saturday at Brown Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Marist men's tennis team continued a strong opening weekend to the 2012-13 season going a combined 14-3 on Saturday in both singles and doubles at the Brown Invitational. The Red Foxes won eight of nine singles' matches and the doubles combination of Trym Nagelstad (Oslo, Norway) and Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) won their flight championship.  

Naglestad and Reznek defeated different opponents from Brown in the semifinals and championship of the Pink Flight. Joris Van Eck (Ospel, The Netherlands) and Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) fell in the semifinals of the Aqua Flight, but bounced back to beat a pair from UConn 8-3 in the consolation final. The sophomore pairing of Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) and Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) did the same, recovering to win the Gray Flight back-draw finals over their opponents from Merrimack. Billy Bishop (Houston, Texas) and Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) swept their two matches against partners from Bryant and Boston University to claim their back-draw championship.

In singles' action, five Red Foxes advanced to the championship of their respective flights including three wins over members of the host school, Brown. Dube advanced to the Yellow Flight championship with a 6-7 (7-5), 6-3, 6-4 win over his opponent from Brown. Van Eck also advanced to the championship in the Red Flight, defeating his foe from Brown by a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 score. Rossi defeated a third Brown Bear 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-3 to advance in the Green Flight. Bishop won his semifinal match in the White Flight 6-3, 7-5 over his opponent from Colgate. Giudici also won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 in the Purple Flight against his adversary from UConn.

Additionally, Klassen, Nagelstad and Jacob Solly (Sydney, Australia) all advanced to the finals of their respective back-draw.

"I am very pleased with the way the entire team played today," Marist Head Coach Tim Smith said. "There is a lot of parody on this team and I am excited that we are doing this well this early."

Championships in each singles' flight will take place on Sunday.
