POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Senior kicker/punter Jason Myers (Chula Vista, Calif.) and junior linebacker Paul Sakowski (Chester, N.Y.) were both recognized for their performances in the Marist football team's 35-10 triumph over Bryant of the Northeast Conference on Saturday.
Myers, who is handling the Red Foxes' placekicks, kickoffs and punts this season, earned a College Football Performance Award as a punter in the contest. He averaged 44.0 on four punts, and downed two inside the 20, including a 52-yard boot which came to a stop at the one. Additionally, Myers had three touchbacks on his six kickoffs, and converted all five of his extra-point attempts.
Sakowski was honored by College Sports Madness as its Pioneer Football League Defensive Player of the Week. The middle linebacker registered five solo tackles, including one for a loss, as he led a defensive front which held Bryant star running back Jordan Brown to just 43 yards on 22 carries. Sakowski also blocked a field-goal on the Bulldogs' opening drive.
The Red Foxes will host Bucknell of the Patriot League in their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on Time Warner Cable Sports, and a fireworks show presented by Legion Fireworks will come after the game.
