EDISON, N.J. - Marist volleyball senior captain Hanna Stoiberg (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) took home the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Week award of the 2012 season. The honor was announced by the conference on Monday.
Stoiberg enjoyed a dominating opening weekend to her senior season, leading Marist to a 2-1 record at the Hofstra Asics Invitational with 24 kills, 47 assists, 15 digs, 7 service aces and 9 total blocks over the three matches, leading to a selection to the All-Tournament Team. In the Red Foxes season-opening, straight set win over Providence, Stoiberg had six kills, seven digs and four aces. She also had a team-high 18 assists, including her 1,000th career assist, becoming only the seventh Marist player to accomplish the feat. In a tough loss to tournament host Hofstra, she again had six kills, while committing only one error. She finished with 12 assists while also adding four digs, three aces and three blocks. In the weekend finale against Fairleigh Dickinson, she doubled her attacking numbers to 12 kills to only two errors while dishing out 17 assists and contributing five blocks and four digs.
This is the second career weekly award for Stoiberg as she was also named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week in September of last season. The Red Foxes as a team last year earned four weekly honors.
Marist returns to the court this weekend when it hosts NJIT, Hartford and Fordham in the Volley in the Valley tournament at McCann Arena. On Saturday, Marist will play NJIT at 12:30 p.m. and Hartford at 6 p.m. They will then wrap up the tournament on Sunday with a 2 p.m. match versus Fordham.
