POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist football team has received a significant amount of preseason attention from College Sports Madness. Senior tight end Anthony Calcagni (Thornwood, N.Y.) was named Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Preseason Third Team All-American. A total of 11 Red Foxes were named to the Preseason All-Pioneer Football League (PFL) Teams as well.
Earlier this summer, Calcagni was selected to the College Football Performance Awards FCS Watch List, and named a Beyond Sports Network FCS First Team All-American. A First Team All-PFL selection last year, Calcagni was also named Preseason First Team All-PFL by College Sports Madness. Joining the senior tight end on the Preseason First Team were senior offensive lineman Phede Celestin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and senior defensive end Terrence Fede (Nyack, N.Y.). Both Celestin and Fede were named Honorable Mention Preseason All-Americans by Beyond Sports Network.
Two junior offensive linemen - center Michael Brereton (Mahopac, N.Y.) and guard Timothy Lamezec (Tuckerton, N.J.) - were named College Sports Madness Preseason Second Team All-PFL. Six Red Foxes earned Third Team honors: senior wide receiver Bartley Leneghan (North Royalton, Ohio), junior offensive lineman Brandon Castelbuono (Wayne, N.J.), senior kicker Jason Myers (Chula Vista, Calif.), senior defensive lineman Chris Katerianakis (Baltimore, Md.), junior linebacker Paul Sakowski (Chester, N.Y.), and senior safety Nick Mainiero (Croton, N.Y.). Mainiero, Myers, and Sakowski were named All-PFL Honorable Mention after last season.
The Marist football team opens the 2012 season on Saturday, Sept. 1 at Bryant. The Red Foxes will play the first of their five home games on Saturday, Sept. 8 against Bucknell. The team is in its fourth season as a member of the PFL, and will open league play on Saturday, Sept. 22 against Davidson, which will take place on Alumni Weekend. The Red Foxes will report for preseason camp on Wednesday, Aug. 8.
