Men's Lacrosse To Honor Past and Present Players on Saturday

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's lacrosse team will play for a berth in the 2012 MAAC Championships when they host Canisius in their regular season finale at 4 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. The Red Foxes will honor their seven seniors during a ceremony prior to the game.

During  a special halftime presentation the Marist Athletics Department will also recognize the members 1981 Marist men's lacrosse team at halftime This team captured the first Knickerbocker conference title in school history. The Marist athletics department will present members of the 1981 team with championship rings to celebrate their achievement.

TIE-BREAKER SCENARIO: The Red Foxes can finish anywhere from second to fifth in the final MAAC standings, with everything coming down Saturday's results. Below are the possible scenarios involving Marist (3-2 MAAC), Detroit (3-2), Canisius (2-3) and Jacksonville (3-3).

  • 1. If Marist defeats Canisius AND Detroit loses to VMI, Marist will get the #2 seed.
  • 2. If Detroit wins, they receive the second seed despite Marist's result as they defeated the Red Foxes in their head-to-head matchup this season.
  • 3. If both Marist and Detroit lose, there will be a four-way tie for second place between Marist/Detroit/Canisus/Jacksonville with a mini-conference being formed from those teams. Detroit will receive the second seed as a result of going 3-0 in the mini-conference. The remaining three teams, as they are all 1-1 against each other, will move on to goals allowed in games within the mini-conference to determine the final two seeds in the Tournament. The teams will be seeded based on fewest goals allowed.

    Jacksonville allowed 17 goals in their games versus Marist and Canisius.
    Marist allowed seven goals versus Jacksonville and plays Canisius on Saturday.
    Canisius allowed nine goals versus Jacksonville and plays Marist on Saturday.

    A. If all three teams remain tied in goals allowed in the mini-conference, they move on to goals allowed in conference play.

    Marist has allowed 54 goals through five conference games.
    Canisius has allowed 58 goals through five conference games.
    Jacksonville has allowed 54 goals through six conference games.

    B. It only two teams remain tied after goals allowed, they are seeded based their head-to-head matchup this season.

LAST TIME OUT: St. Joseph's Ryan McGee scored his sixth goal of the game with one second remaining in overtime as the Marist men's lacrosse team dropped a tough non-conference game 10-9 Tuesday night at Tenney Stadium.

Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) and Jack Doherty (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) each had four point nights with two goals and two assists each. Evan Guarini (Long Valley, N.J.) also scored twice and Drew Nesmith (Montclair, N.J.), Colin Joka (Conshohocken, Pa.) and Ethan Fox (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) each found the back of the net. Craig Goodermote (Holtsville, N.Y.) made 10 saves in goal and Matt Dugan (Cortland, N.Y.) scooped up a team-high eight ground balls while taking all 23 face-offs and winning 14 of them.

HISTORY VERSUS CANISIUS: In a low scoring affair, the Marist men's lacrosse fell to Canisius by a score of 7-5 last season. A 39:25 scoreless drought by Marist, ultimately led to the Golden Griffins securing the victory. Marist was led on offense by  Aedan Herman (Stafford, Va.), who had three points. Brendan Price (Bay Shore, N.Y.) came up big for the Red Foxes on defense as he kept the team within striking distance with his nine saves.

Canisius got onto scoreboard first with a Jimmy Haney goal 7:25 into the first quarter. A little over two minutes later, Corey Zindel tied the game up when he converted a Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) assist with 5:20 remaining. This scoring connection helped both players extend their consecutive point streaks; 26 games for Zindel and 22 for Rice. Two Simon Giourmetakis' goals closed out the scoring in the first quarter at 3-1 in favor of Canisius. These two goals would end up being the last points of the entire first half, as both teams were held off the scoreboard in the second.

SCOUTING CANISIUS: Canisius relies heavily on senior attack men Simon Giourmetakis  with 28 goals and 8 assists. Another offensive threat the Golden Griffins have is freshman midfielder Tim Edwards . The former central New York player of the year currently has nine goals. In between the pipes for Canisius is Sean Callahan with 70 saves on the season. Senior long stick midfielder Brendan Murphy currently leads the team in ground balls with 42.
