FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Red Foxes put forth a dominate performance in their second to last conference game as they defeated Manhattan 5-0 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Tuesday. Looking to stay among the top three in the MAAC standings, Marist earned four straight-set singles victories and all three doubles matches.
Senior Kayla O'Donovan (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and junior Joana Sun (Gales Ferry, Conn.) each won 6-0, 6-0 in their matches. O'Donovan defeated Alyssa Rosello in #6 singles, while Sun defeated Caitlin Bricketto in #3 singles.
Senior Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) and junior Kelsey Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) were the other two Red Foxes to earn individual points as they swept their opponents in singles action. Raynor was victorious in her #1 match versus Lili Johnson, 6-0, 7-5 and McCarthy defeated Hilary Valenzuela at #2, 6-1, 6-1.
Sophomore Marielle Campbell (Patterson, N.Y.) was leading her #4 singles match versus Brianna Turano with a victory in the first set 7-5. Both Campbell and freshman Sabrina Tahir's (Yonkers, N.Y.) matches were not completed due to lack of daylight.
In doubles action, the pairing of Raynor and McCarthy won #1 doubles, 8-4, while the #2 pairing of Tahir and O'Donovan won 8-6. The third duo of freshman Tessa Lewis (Lewiston, N.Y.) and Sun won their match by a score of 8-5.
The Red Foxes (8-7, 4-2 MAAC) will look to clinch their spot in the 2012 MAAC Championship with a victory in their season-ending match on Friday, April 20 when they travel to Rider for a 1 p.m. match.
