POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.
- The Marist women's tennis team completed a weekend of non-conference with
a 1-1 record, highlighted by a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Albany on Sunday
afternoon. On Saturday, the Red Foxes fell at Rhode Island by a score of 6-1.
On the weekend, upperclassmen Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) and Kelsey Raynor
(Garden City, N.Y.) led the way with a 2-0 showing in doubles action and 1-1
records in singles play.
On Saturday, the Red Foxes traveled to Kingston, Rhode
Island to meet up with the URI Rams. Raynor had the most success for Marist as
she teamed with McCarthy to win their first doubles match and her individual
first singles match. In doubles, the duo of Raynor and McCarthy defeated the
sister tandem of Kirsten and Tristany Leikem, 8-6. In singles, the junior beat
Pam Emery in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
McCarthy had a challenge on her hands in #2 singles as
she battled with Kirsten Leikem in a three-set match. After dropping the first
set 6-3, McCarthy fought back to win the second set 7-6 (7-2) before falling in
the third set, 10-6.
On Sunday, Marist got back to its winning ways with a 4-3
victory over Albany in its home opener.
The day began with a sweep in doubles action as all three
pairings: Raynor/McCarthy, Sun/Campbell and Tahir/Lewis won with 8-6 decisions.
In singles play, three triumphs clinched the overall win
for the Red Foxes. Winners include: McCarthy in #2 singles over Livia Gherman,
6-4, 2-6, 6-1, Marielle Campbell (Patterson, N.Y.) in #4 singles over Cheryl
Kukkonen, retired and Sabrina Tahir (Yonkers, N.Y.) in #5 singles over Sarah
Iannone, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.
Joana Sun (Gales Ferry, Conn.) saw her #3 singles match
go to a tie-breaking third set with Kirsten Scott. After losing the first set
6-1, Sun came back to win the second set 6-3. In set number three, Scott took
the victory with a 6-3 score.
The Red Foxes (4-4) will next be in action on Wednesday,
March 28 at Hartford in a 3 p.m. match.
