The Marist women's basketball team looks to get back into the win column as they travel to St. Bonaventure to take on the Bonnies in a non-conference matchup. This is the second of four consecutive games away from McCann Arena for the Red Foxes. They fell at Boston University last weekend and, after Sundays game, will head to Long Island Dec. 21-22 to participating in the New York Life Holiday Invitational, presented by Hofstra University. The Red Foxes will play Auburn then either Hofstra or CCSU.
LAST TIME OUT
- Marist dropped a 49-36 decision at Boston University on Dec. 10 in Boston.
- Kristina Danella led the Red Foxes with 12 points. Corielle Yarde had nine points and 11 rebounds.
- Yarde also added a team-high three blocks and Danella had two to go along with four steals as Marist played well defensively as a team with eight blocks and ten thefts.
FAST-BREAK POINTS
- Senior guard Corielle Yarde was named the MAAC Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 28 - Dec. 4. It was the fourth weekly award of Yarde's career and first by a Red Fox player this season. She earned the honor once last season and twice as a sophomore.
- In the first posting of Division 1 statistics on Dec. 5, senior guard Kristine Best is ranked 10th nationally with her 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio. Her and Yarde (2.4) hold the 1-2 spots in the MAAC in that category.
- Yarde became the 18th player in Marist history to reach 1,000 career points when she hit her first basket of the season against Villanova on Nov. 16.
SCOUTING THE BONNIES
- St. Bonaventure enters Sunday's matchup at 9-1 on the season and currently riding a five-game winning streak. They defeated fellow MAAC opponent Niagara on Friday night by a score of 63-49. They have also defeated Canisius as well as two road wins against Big East members St. John's and West Virginia.
- The Bonnies are led by Jessica Jenkins who comes in averaging 14.5 points per game. Jenkins is shooting 40.8% from three-point range is over 40% overall from the floor. Additionally, Megan Van Tatenhove is also in double digits with 12.2 PPG while chipping in 5.6 rebounds per game. Van Tatenhove is shooting 52.4% on the season.
- Alaina Walker averages six rebounds per game to lead the team and Doris Ortega is right behind her with 5.1 RPG. Walker is also the team-leader in assists, averaging 2.1 per game.
MARIST VS. THE ATLANTIC 10
- Marist is 11-14 against Atlantic 10 conference institutions all-time. The Red Foxes have never faced seven teams in the conference including Charlotte, Dayton, Duquesne, La Salle, Masachusetts, Saint Joseph's and Saint Louis.
- Last season, the Red Foxes went 0-1 against teams from the Atlantic 10, with their lone game coming in their home-opener against St. Bonaventure.
- Sunday will be the final regular season game for the Red Foxes versus an opponent from the Atlantic 10.
HISTORY LESSON - MARIST VS. ST. BONAVENTURE
- Sunday will mark the sixth meeting between these two teams.
- Marist leads the all-time series 3-2 although the Bonnies defeated the Red Foxes 45-40 last season in Marist's home opener on Dec. 4.
- In that game, Kelsey Beynnon scored 11 points, which was then her career-high, on 5-for-9 shooting from the field and went 1-for-2 from three-point range She also added two assists, two steals and a rebound. On the glass, the Red Foxes were paced by Brandy Gang who equaled what was then her career-high with nine rebounds.
NOT TOO SHABBY ON THE ROAD
- Playing on the road has not proven to be a problem for the Red Foxes since Giorgis took over the program before the 2002-03 season. In his tenure, Marist is an impressive 128-49 (.723) away from McCann Arena.
- Last season the Red Foxes went 21-2 in non-home games. Their two losses came against #14 St. John's in the first game of the season and #6 Duke in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
- Thus far this season, Marist is 2-1 on the road.
PULLING AWAY IN DECEMBER
- The Red Foxes have traditionally played well in December under Giorgis. Since Giorgis took over as head coach, Marist has gone 44-18 in the last month of the calendar year.
- Last season Marist went 5-1 in December, including 4-0 on the road. After winning at Hartford, the Red Foxes won all three games, including a 63-60 victory over #21 Nebraska, en route to winning the Duel in the Desert in Last Vegas.
- Under Giorgis, Marist has had two undefeated months of December. The team went 7-0 in December of 2008 and 5-0 in 2005.
- Four of the five meetings between Marist and St. Bonaventure have come in December. The teams have split those games, with the Bonnies winning the past two.
SAME BOAT AS LAST YEAR
- The start to this season is quite similar to how the Red Foxes started off the 2010-11 season, when they lost their season-opener 64-50 to #14/16 St. John's, also of the Big East. This year, they dropped their first game to Villanova.
- Marist also was 4-2 a year ago after their first six games. Lest you forget, the Red Foxes went on a nation-best 27-game winning streak that carried them into the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
