POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Marist head men's basketball coach Chuck Martin announced the signings of Jay Bowie, Adam Kemp and Pieter Prinsloo to National Letters of Intent on Monday. Bowie, Kemp and Prinsloo will all join the Red Foxes for the 2010-11 season as true freshmen.
"I'm really excited about the three incoming freshmen in this year's recruiting class," Martin said. "All three are tremendous leaders with great character. Academically, they're as strong as any recruits I've brought here. Their size and athleticism will help us greatly in the coming years. All come from winning programs and bring something special to the table."
Jay Bowie - Guard / Forward - 6-5 / 200 - Tampa, Fla. / Tampa Prep
Bowie helped lead his team to the Class 2A state final this past season. He was Tampa Prep's leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 16.3 points and 10.4 rebounds per game while also averaging nearly three steals per contest. It was the second straight year Bowie averaged a double-double, as he had 14.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game as a junior as his team reached the state semifinals.
Martin on Bowie: "Jay is a 6-5 versatile wing with tremendous upside. He's a slasher, driver and relentless finisher around the basket. He has the potential to be one of the best defensive players on our team, and he will generate offense through his defense."
Adam Kemp - Forward - 6-9 / 240 - Sherrill, N.Y. / Winchendon School (Mass.)
Last season, Kemp played at the Winchendon School in Massachusetts, one of the top prep programs in the country. Prior to that, he played at Verona-Verona-Sherrill High School in New York, where he averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds per game as a senior.
Martin on Kemp: "Adam brings us much needed size and strength. He will provide an inside presence offensively and defensively, but his greatest impact will be on the defensive end. He has the ability to come in and help us."
Pieter Prinsloo - Forward - 6-10 / 230 - Johannesburg, South Africa / Dover H.S. (Del.)
A skilled post player, Prinsloo averaged eight points, 10 rebounds, seven blocks and five assists per game at Dover High School in Delaware this past season. He helped lead his team to the state finals this year. Prinsloo is a native of Johannesburg, South Africa who has spent the last six years in the United States.
Martin on Prinsloo: "I'm really excited about Pieter's skill level. We welcome his much-needed size. It's an asset to have someone of his size and skill level. He's a terrific addition to our Marist family."
