Perea comes to Poughkeepsie from Pomona Pitzer where she served as the assistant coach for the men’s water polo team in 2012 and women’s water polo team from 2013-16. She helped lead Pomona Pitzer to two straight SCIAC titles in her first two seasons as an assistant of the women’s team, including an outright title in 2014 and a co-championship in 2015.

Prior to her coaching career, Perea played water polo at Pomona Pitzer. She was named Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Year and also NCAA Division III Player of the Year in both 2010 and 2011, as well as Pomona-Pitzer's Most Valuable Athlete. Perea graduated as the program's all-time leading scorer, while also helping the team to two SCIAC titles and a Division III national championship as well.

Following her graduation in 2011, she continued her playing career professionally in Madrid, Spain where she played for La Latina in 2011 and 2012.
