ALBANY, New York – Sophomore Mara Schiffhauer had a breakthrough race, placing third overall out of nearly 200 runners, to lead the Marist College women's cross country team to a second-place finish out of 17 teams at Saturday's 49th annual Albany Invitational, held on the campus of UAlbany. Schiffhauer completed the 5,000-meter course in 17:59.5, one of only three runners to dip under the 18-minute barrier for the course on a windy and chilly day.
The Red Foxes trailed only host Albany, which won the meet with 30 points. Marist had 82 points, holding off Middlebury (85 points) and Sacred Heart (89 points) for the runner-up spot. Manhattan (123 points) rounded out the top five.
Rounding out the scoring spots for the Red Foxes were junior Elizabeth Wasserman (12th, 18:31.6), senior Nicki Nesi (13th, 18:31.8), senior Christine Coughlin (25th, 18:49.9) and junior Janelle Solviletti (29th, 18:52.6).
The Albany meet was the final regular season race for the cross country team, which now enters championship season. The next meet is the MAAC Championships on Saturday, October 31, at Rosedale Park in New Jersey.
