Women's Tennis To Begin MAAC Championship Competition On Saturday

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - The Marist women's tennis team will take to the courts this weekend at Mercer County Park as one of four teams competing for the 2013 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title. The second-seeded Red Foxes will be on the hunt for their fourth MAAC Championship and first since 2011.

Marist (9-7, 6-1 MAAC), who ended the regular season in a three-way tie for first place, will begin play on Saturday, April 27 at 10 a.m. with a rematch of last weekend's competition versus Niagara (14-7, 6-1 MAAC). With the MAAC regular season title on the line at Niagara on April 20, the Red Foxes pulled out a hard-fought 4-3 victory. After winning the all-important doubles' point, as well as straight set points at first and sixth singles, a three-set victory at third singles by senior Joana Sun gave the match victory.

Also being held at Mercer County Park on Saturday at 10 a.m. will be the other MAAC Women's Tennis Semifinal involving the top-seeded Fairfield Stags and fourth-seeded Loyola Greyhounds.

The joint MAAC Tennis and Rowing Awards Show will take place on Friday, April 26 at 6 p.m. Along with the presentation of the Regular Season Championship trophy, the Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Coach of the Year awards will be handed out. The All-MAAC First and Second Teams and All-Academic Teams will also be announced.

Friday's banquet will be streamed live on MAAC.TV.

The Red Foxes have found themselves atop the MAAC standings as they won eight of their final 11 matches of the season, including posting a 6-1 mark versus conference competition. Individually, Marist athletes have gone 33-9 in MAAC play with Joana Sun (Mansfield, Mass.) and Marielle Campbell (Patterson, N.Y.) leading the way with six wins each. Lisa Ventimigilia (Bayside, N.Y.) has gone 5-1, while Kelsey Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) and Karly Pang (Kaneohe, Hawaii) both went 4-2 in regular season MAAC action. In doubles competition, the Red Foxes went 15-5 with the first pairing of Sun and Pang and second pairing of Raynor and Sabrina Tahir (Yonkers, N.Y.) each going 4-2.
